In the transition process to the new Bachelor/Master structure of higher education in Europe, the ICS participates in a new selective, internationally oriented, Research Master Program, organized within the framework of the participating Faculties. This program is oriented to sociological research within the general framework of the ICS Research Program.
Core elements are deductive theory building, and the integration of theory formation and empirical research by model building and statistical evaluation of hypotheses.
Successful completion of the Research Master Program will be a good preparation for the ICS Ph.D program. However, the selection procedure for the ICS Ph.D program operates independently of the Research Master Program, and having graduated from the Research Master Program is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for selection into the ICS Ph.D program.
The organisation of the Research Master Programs is done separately in the three participating universities, but with a close coordination. Prospective students can apply at the university of their choice.
The ICS Research Master Program is aimed primarily at promising students with a BA in Sociology or Social Sciences or Political Sciences/Public Administration, with a good background in statistical analysis and an interest in interdisciplinary and comparative approaches. Students with a non-sociology major but sufficient training in systematic social science theory construction and quantitative analysis are also encouraged to apply. This includes students educated in one of the other social sciences, including economics and (social) psychology, as well as students with a background in computer sciences or mathematics.
