IN MEMORIAM: CORA MAAS

Completely unexpected, Cora Maas passed away on February 8, 2010. Cora has been among our very first PhD students. Starting her PhD project in 1987 at ICS-Utrecht, she was a member of our second yeargroup.
She defended her thesis "Probleemleerlingen in het Basisonderwijs" at Utrecht University in 1992 (ICS dissertation series no. 12). After having completed her PhD, she joined the Department of Methods and Statistics of Utrecht University, specializing in multilevel modeling. She has been a prolific researcher and author in this field and likewise a dedicated and charming teacher. Cora was a highly esteemed member of the Department of Methods and Statistics until her untimely death.
She collaborated fruitfully with the ICS through teaching courses and individual consultation in her field of specialization for our PhD students as well as, in more recent years, for students of our research master's programs Sociology and Social Research (SaSR) and Migration, Ethnic Relations, and Multiculturalism (MERM) at ICS-Utrecht. PhD students as well as research master's students will miss her dearly.

In addition, there was a tie of a much more personal nature with Cora since she is the younger sister of Ineke Maas who is a member of our very first yeargroup of PhD students and meanwhile one of the most senior and prominent colleagues at the Department of Sociology of Utrecht University and the ICS.

All of us will miss Cora a lot and our thoughts are with Ineke as well as with Cora's parents, further family, and friends.
